A student asked me how I would deal with someone who disrespects me. I told her that I would no longer allow that person around me.
She then said what would I do if she continues to disrespect me? My answer was “I wouldn’t know that she is continuing to disrespect me because I no longer allow that person around me.”
My student then said “Maybe a friend told you that she is still talking about you.”
I replied “I would be more concerned about how that friend responded to the person talking badly about me, then I would about the actual person talking badly about me.” “You would” she asked. “Absolutely. I expect the person who is not my friend to talk bad about me out of jealousy and envy. I expect my friend to defend me out of true friendship, loyalty, and a genuine love. If she did not, then she is no more of a friend to the person speaking badly about me. So she can remain in the presence of the person speaking badly about me, because she is no longer permitted in my presence.”
Lesson learned.
